Nestled in the Liurong road, Six Banyan Temple is one of the four major Buddist temples in Guangzhou. The time-honored temple features a long history of over 1400 years and enjoy as much fame as another ancient Buddha temple Bright Filial Temple( Guangzhou Temple).
In the 3rd year of Yuan-fu Regin, Su Dong-po (a great writer in the ancient history of China) once visited the temple, and saw the six old banyan trees; he then joyfully wrote down two Chinese characters "Liu Rong" (Which means six Banyan Trees) as an inscription.
Since that, the temple was called "Six Banyan Temple". The most valued attraction inside the temple is an ancient pagoda nicknamed "Flower Pagoda", featuring 1023 small Buddist figures of exquisite craftsmanship; together with other component parts, the pagoda weighs nearly 5 tons heavy. |
